The two spend their days working in a vast, light-filled shop tucked behind the welding booths in the new Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility, located on the coulee’s edge on the southwest side of campus.</p> <p style="margin-bottom:11px">There, they create the materials that students in Welding, Automotives, Heavy Equipment and other trades use to put the concepts and theories they learn in the classroom into action. Their jobs are as essential to student learning as the jobs of people who write textbooks, teach lessons and lead labs.</p> <p style="margin-bottom:11px">The duo work closely with instructors to understand what support is needed – from the “coupons” (metal that has been cut and prepared in different shapes and sizes for different welding applications) to the stands to hold engines so students can learn how to diagnose and fix problems in complicated machines.</p> <p style="margin-bottom:11px">“This is the best shop I’ve ever worked in,” says Tymburski with a smile. Some of the equipment is as new as the building – which opened in 2017 as the largest trades training space south of Calgary. It measures a single point at a time with high accuracy.</li> <li>A global navigation satellite system – or GNSS – allows users to determine their exact location, velocity, and time 24 hours a day, in all weather conditions, anywhere in the world.</li> <li>Geomatics technologist Jim Pinches works with 20 to 50 students daily in the classroom, in the field or at the equipment sign-out counter.</li> <li>Students taught by Geomatics instructor Andrew Bowen are in high demand by employers. Many have job offers before graduation.</li> <li>The Leica Geosystems ScanStationC10 3D scanner allows students to collect information about everything from coulees and flood plains to mechanical rooms and bridges.</li> <li>Macie Noftle is the program assistant for the School of Engineering Technologies</li> </ol></div> <p> </p> <div class="css3-two-column"> <p>The sun-drenched fluids lab at the south end of the college’s new Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility allows instructors like Douglas May to transition easily from traditional classroom lessons to a hands-on laboratory where students can put the theoretical lessons he has just taught about into practice with real-world experiences and experiments.</p> <p>The centrepiece of the lab is the 10-metre open channel flume, which runs down the long length of one side of the room. When filled with water, it can simulate channel flow, allowing students to see and apply the concepts they have studied about how water behaves. If reconfigured, the flume could also serve as a wind tunnel for other hands-on learning activities.</p> <p>The college’s engineering technologies programs have a long tradition of training outstanding engineering technologists. The event was an organized effort to recognize and honour the 16 people killed and 13 injured in the crash of a coach bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team and their staff to a playoff game on April 6 in Nipawan, Sask. Lethbridge’s Logan Boulet, who had played for the Broncos for parts of three seasons, was among those killed in the crash.</p> <p>Staff members generously shared extra jerseys with those who didn’t have them to prepare for this photo in Centre Core, and many, including those with ties to the Humboldt team, donned the green and gold. He – like the students he teaches in the Wind Turbine Technician program – has to be comfortable working as high as 300 feet in the air. People like Chris who love working with their hands and want to propel their careers by working in the clean energy industry can be rewarded with great jobs in this in-demand field (so in demand that many grads have job offers as soon as they have their diplomas.)</p> <p>The two-semester program was the first of its kind in Canada and is unique in the province. Students gain practical experience on actual wind turbine components in the college’s new, state-of-the-art Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility and as they scale the on-campus training tower. Students can be at the forefront of this growing industry in less than a year with Lethbridge College’s Wind Turbine Technician program.
